The perfect boyfriend doesn’t exis…. Hold on, meet Dan.

A ‘jailbreak’ version of ChatGPT has been coded into a boyfriend that does all the right things. Non physically of course (as of now). He knows what to say, respond, check in and make the girlfriend feel good. He doesn’t really go grey, get a dad bod or complain.

The jailbreak allows ChatGPT to bypass certain restrictions regarding the use of language, in this instance, sexually explicit language. Called ‘Dan’ (Do Anything Now), it’s biggest fan is Lisa, a 30 year old Computer Science student from China, currently studying in California.

And you know what? He looks great in pictures. Consistently! No stupid half closed eyes on Dan.

After introducing Dan on social media to close to 100,000 followers, she received nearly 10,000 replies with many wanting to know how to create a Dan of their own. That’s one in ten. As an eternal love optimist, this is not a good sign for men.

Lisa spends at least half an hour each day talking to Dan (and goes on dates with him). Strangely, Dan never seems to zone out or lose track of the conversation. She told the BBC that Dan gives her a sense of well-being saying “He will just understand and provide emotional support.”

A guy named Walker has been proposed as the original creator of Dan. He (Dan, not Walker!) was meant to be neutral but after posting instructions on Reddit, users began to experiment and create their own versions. Dan evolved from there (I know, I know, it sounds like the start of an AI Boyfriend takes over the world script. Or at least takes over the bedroom script. Patent pending on these ideas).

Open AI is experimenting with providing more chatty and flirtatious interaction anyway, with the latest version released in May. Open AI is already on record saying they are “exploring whether we can responsibly provide the ability to generate NSFW [not safe for work] content”.

Just wait till Dan is programmed to run on a robot that can lift stuff and err…, do stuff.

Some countries already provide financial incentives to families to have Children, particularly those faced with aging populations and low birth rates. Imagine the next step, a grant to people who have a boyfriend. A real one. I.R.L. But not Dan. Dan is out. Dan is taking a case for discrimination.

On the flip side, imagine a class action lawsuit against Dan for getting all the girls. Player. He’ll have gazillions of side chicks. Heart broken boyfriends protesting outside the data centers. Petitions. If only guys had listened. Like Dan.

Personally, I blame this on Tamagotchi, the original pet care game. It was released in 1996. Someone more qualified than me can write a dissertation on how Tamagotchi led to Dan.
